Brussels, Belgium
Vitals: Junior Economics Major, Studying in Brussels, Belgium during the Spring of ‘09
Goals: I think the goals for my study abroad are pretty straightforward. I want do well in school and make sure that I am on track to graduate, but also don’t want to miss out any opportunities to explore Western Europe. A big thing for me is to learn as much French as I possibly can. Hopefully by the time I am ready to leave Brussels, and Europe in general, I will have immersed myself so much in the culture and language that it will be difficult for locals to identify me as an American.
Motivation: As a former member of the Wisconsin Men’s hockey team I never thought that I would have the opportunity to study abroad. After all, being a member of the hockey team here is a year round commitment, and barely left me any time to visit home. After a coach’s decision to remove me from the roster after my sophomore year, I began to explore opportunities that were unavailable to me as a member of the team, and decided that studying abroad was something that I definitely wanted to do. Hockey had previously allowed me to travel to Eastern Europe as a member of Team USA, and the experience was one I will never forget. I am motivated to add more great European experiences to the ones that I already have, and to take full advantage of an opportunity that I was convinced that I would never have.

Goals: To take in as much as possible while I’m abroad and make it an unforgettable positive learning experience.
Motivation: I just want to get out of the country and venture out on my own. I wanted to explore different cultures and learn a language along the way. I chose South Korea, because I’ve always been interested in their pop culture and language for as long as I could remember. Lastly, I want to shop everywhere possible and South Korea is definitely a hot spot to shop.

Madrid, Spain
Vitals: World Language Education-Spanish, Portuguese Minor
Goals: I hope to travel and immerse myself in European culture while studying, practicing and learning languages. I’m very excited to be in Europe for the first time and hope to spend a significant time getting to know Spain, but also spend time traveling throughout Europe such as France, Germany, Portugal and Italy to experience the wide and unique diversity that Europe offers.
Motivation: In order to become an educator it is important to have firsthand knowledge of the countries where the language is spoken. I worked for Concordia and I went with my high school to Guatemala; however, I feel that a semester experience is essential to my growth and knowledge of the Spanish culture. The Madrid program also is unique because it is a location with a wide array of opportunities and activities for students and somewhat close to Portugal so I can practice both of the languages I am passionate about. I love the thrill of adventure and am always ready and excited to see, learn and participate in cultures located in different regions of the world.
Previous overseas travel: Canada (even though it’s not really overseas), Mexico, Guatemala |

London, England
Vitals: Journalism and Mass Communications Major
Goals: I want to learn as much about the culture has possible. I have never lived outside the Midwest in America, so I am anxious to meet and get to know the natives of my host country, London. I want to visit as many sights, museums, plays and restaurants has possible to understand a culture different from my own. Also, London is close to many other European countries; I want to take advantage of this and travel to at least three other countries during the spring semester.
Motivation: Study Abroad has been in my plans since I started college. College is a great time to travel because the programs the school has available gives students great resources and opportunities for travel that they might not get later in life. Many of my friends and family have studied or lived abroad in college and I have heard amazing stories. I love travel and have traveled around the United States but am ready for a new experience overseas!
Previous overseas travel: None overseas, the only other country I’ve been to is Mexico. |

Montpellier, France
Vitals: Junior; Psychology and French double major, pre-med concentration
Goals: I hope to improve my French fluency and I’m excited to experience firsthand the monuments, cities, and food that I’ve read about since I started learning French.
Motivation: I’ve been taking French classes since elementary school but have never traveled to France, so I’ve wanted to go for a long time. I thought study abroad would be the best way to immerse myself in the culture and get to know France through the eyes of someone living there. It’s also going to be a great way to see other parts of Europe too!

I agree with Ryan Finn. One should be proud of one’s cultural heritage!
